2018-04-08 | Eastern Region | Eastern Region

As part of the global "Serve the Planet" initiative, many coastal cleanup campaigns have been conducted around the country under the Public Outreach initiative of the SSIO of Sri Lanka.

Another such cleanup was carried out by the Sathya Sai Centres of Thambiluvil and Thirukovil in collaboration with the Thambiluvil Pradeshya Sabah along a 1.5 kilometer coastal stretch between the villages of Tambiluvil and Thirukovil.

73 members of the general public, along with villagers from the Sathya Sai Village Integrated Program community of Nehrupuram joined hands with volunteers from the Sathya Sai Centres of Thambiluvil, Thirukovil, Akkaraipattu, Alayadivembu, Karaitivu, Veeramunai and Thamaraikerny for this initiative. The newly elected Chairman, Vice Chairman and Board Members of Thirukovil Pradesa Sabah (Local Government / Local Authority which is the responsible body for the waste management within its respective area), the waste collection team from the Pradesa Sabah, the Public Health Inspector of the area, the Grama Serva Officer of the village, Sports Club members of the village, Past Pupil Association members of the village, members from the University Students Association and members from a local NGO together engaged in the campaign and collected three truckloads of plastic items from the beach.

Many volunteers and members of the various government and non-governmental organisations that took part in commended the initiative, stating how much it had inspired them to take care of and preserve the environment that protects and nurtures us all
