Jaffna
This village in the Jaffna district on the Northern coast of Sri Lanka was adopted in June 2017. There are about 40 families with their main occupation being manual labour and Toddy tapping. This area gets flooded during the rainy season and since it is located near the sea, the water is salty. Hence, they acquired drinking water from a nearby temple. Alcoholism and drug addiction among men and young adults have been a big social issue in this region. Therefore, the government officer of this region approach us to help develop this village.
Following are the activities carried out,
- “Sharing of love” was the entry into the village. The villagers prepared the “prasadam’ (Pongal), sang Bhajans and Spiritual talk was delivered. Love Packs were distributed to 27 families and a sewing machine was gifted to a poor family.
- EHV Classes held every week in the temple for 30 – 40 children attend these classes and were taught to recite the Gayatri Mantra.
- Seeds were distributed to encourage home gardening.
- Medical Camp and Narayana Seva were conducted. An additional shed was erected to accommodate the people. In which 64 people were examined and 250 Food parcels were distributed.
- A Multipurpose shed was constructed.
- Two Water tanks were installed at two sites. These tanks are filled once a week with drinking water by a bowser.
- A house was built to a poor family.
