There are approximately 250 elderly care homes available for the total estimate of 1.9million seniors. The number of Sri Lankans over the age of 60 is forecasted to grow to over 22% of the total population by 2030. Out of these citizens, 23% are expected to live below the poverty line. There are no sustainable retirement benefits for 80% of the elderly in Sri Lanka, with 62% being compelled to depend on their children or relatives for a living. The ratio of the working population against senior citizens is expected to reduce from 6:1 (in 2001), to 3:1 by the year 2030.
In 2017, after identifying the need to provide care and facilities for senior citizens who live below the poverty line, the Sri Sathya Sai Home for Elders was built and opened on a scenic plot of land, 32km south of Colombo, in the suburban town of Meegoda.
Overlooking a large stretch of paddy fields, the Home offers tranquillity and stillness cherished by the elderly. The closest government hospital is located approximately 4km away from the Home, at Padukka.
The first phase of this project is home to a total of 40 elders, separated into 20 females and 20 males. The building has 2 spacious, gender-segregated dormitories, with attached bathrooms equipped with hot and cold water. There is also space for treatment in designated rooms in case an elder becomes sick while at the Home.
The Home also has a common dining area, a library, and recreational space. A multi-faith shrine has been built in a conveniently accessible and central location within the complex. Elders are encouraged to connect with their spirituality in this shrine.
The surrounding area is beautifully landscaped, with a border of trees and natural grounds with seats and walkways to enable the elders to engage in meditation or walk around the scenic premises. The entire complex is supplemented with wheelchair access, with handrails and grab bars to assist the elders in the washrooms, passages and corridors to ensure their safety.
A team of professional caregivers along with staff assigned for housekeeping, maintenance and kitchen services ensure smooth operations of the Home. They work with the guidance of a Committee of Management. The services of the panel of doctors, who also serve the Sathya Sai Suva Sevana Cancer Care Hospice, are be available at all times. All aspects of building and equipping the home and subsequent day-to-day operations have to date been accomplished with the blessings of Swami, and the voluntary assistance of well wishers.
