Flood Relief Efforts by SSSIO Sri Lanka.

2024-11-27 | Eastern Region | _

As part of its ongoing commitment to serving vulnerable communities, the SSSIO Sri Lanka undertook a two-phase flood relief program in the Eastern region during 2024. Heavy rains and cyclone conditions, caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, led to widespread flooding, particularly affecting the northern and eastern parts of the country. These floods displaced numerous families and created severe challenges for affected communities.

Phase 1 of the relief initiative focused on supporting 397 families in seven Sai-adopted villages: Karadiyankulam, Alayadivempu, 4th Colony, Nerupuram, Thandiyadi, Samuthrapuram, and Valathapitty. Each family received dry ration packets based on household size. Families with 1 to 2 members were provided 5kg of rice, 1kg of dhal, and 3kg of wheat flour. Households with 3 to 5 members received 10kg of rice, 1kg of dhal, and 3kg of wheat flour, while larger families with more than 6 members received 15kg of rice, 1kg of dhal, and 3kg of wheat flour. These essential supplies helped alleviate the immediate food needs of the flood-affected families.

In Phase 2, the relief efforts were extended to assist 500 families in eight Sai Centre areas and one Sai-adopted village. The beneficiaries were from Akkaraipattu, Vinayagapuram, Kallady, Karaitheevu, Selvanagar (the Sai-adopted village), Eruvil, Batticaloa, Kalmunai, and Periya-Kallar. The dry food packets distributed were similarly tailored to household sizes, ensuring that families received adequate support. This phase was carefully planned and executed to ensure that aid reached the targeted families efficiently.

Through these two phases, SSSIO Sri Lanka addressed the immediate needs of flood-affected families, providing not only sustenance but also hope and relief during a challenging time. These efforts reflect SSSIO’s dedication to uplifting communities in distress through compassion and service.
